The Jammu and Kashmir Congress unit has announced that it will hold protests across all district headquarters on March 9, 2026, against the India-US trade deal. The protests were announced by J&K Congress chief Tariq Hameed Karra, who demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over what he called a “surrender” before US President Donald Trump.
Addressing a rally in the R S Pura border belt of Jammu, Karra alleged that the Prime Minister had compromised India’s dignity, honour, and national interests in the trade negotiations. “We demand the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for succumbing to US pressures over foreign policy,” Karra said. He also described the trade deal as “anti-farmer and anti-people.”
The Congress protests are also timed to coincide with the beginning of the second phase of Parliament’s Budget Session. The party has additionally planned a yatra to demand the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, which was revoked when the region was bifurcated into two Union Territories in 2019.
Meanwhile, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has been holding meetings with civil society representatives and religious leaders to maintain calm in the region, particularly following protests after the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. Authorities have lifted precautionary restrictions across Kashmir, and high-speed internet and mobile calling services have been restored.
