The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday launched a first-of-its-kind Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot, ‘Satyavachan,’ designed to help citizens verify the authenticity of legal notices and prevent the growing menace of “digital arrests.”
Real-Time Verification The chatbot, integrated into the CBI’s official portal and WhatsApp, allows users to upload screenshots of suspicious summons or video-call recordings. Using Generative AI and a centralized law enforcement database, the tool can instantly flag whether a notice is a legitimate government document or a deepfake-enabled scam.
The Rise of Digital Arrests The move comes after a sharp 40% spike in cases where scammers pose as CBI, ED, or Mumbai Police officials over Skype calls, claiming the victim’s Aadhaar card has been used for money laundering or drug trafficking. “Our goal is to break the psychological fear that scammers create. If a citizen can verify a claim in 10 seconds, the scammer loses control,” a senior Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) official said.
Tech in Law Enforcement ‘Satyavachan’ is built on a indigenous Large Language Model (LLM) that supports 12 Indian languages, ensuring accessibility across rural and urban sectors. The CBI has also partnered with major telecom providers to automatically trigger an alert if a verified scam-linked number attempts to reach a high-risk user.
