Karnataka’s Food Safety and Drug Administration deploys 30 special teams to inspect premier establishments, unearthing severe hygiene lapses and expired produce.
By DW Pulse | BENGALURU — 8 August 2026 — A massive citywide food safety inspection drive across three-star and five-star hotels in Bengaluru has exposed widespread hygiene violations, including the storage of expired meat, fish, dairy, and fungus-laden vegetables. Operating under the directives of State Health Minister U.T. Khader, the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) mobilized 30 special enforcement teams to inspect 26 premier hospitality establishments within Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits.
Key Highlights
- Targeted Luxury Crackdown: Thirty teams of food safety officers inspected 26 prominent three-star and five-star hotels across Bengaluru Urban district.
- Seizure of Unsafe Produce: Authorities confiscated and destroyed hundreds of kilograms of expired meat, sub-standard fish, outdated milk supplies, and vegetables showing active fungal growth.
- Laboratory Analysis: Thirty-five distinct food and ingredient samples—ranging from raw meats and oils to spices and dairy—were collected and dispatched for formal laboratory testing.
Unhygienic Storage and FSSAI Violations Exposed
The surprise inspections revealed a stark divergence from regulatory compliance within some of the city’s most elite hospitality venues. Inspectors flagged widespread non-compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA), noting improper food handling, misbranded stock, and a failure to maintain separate storage partitions for vegetarian and non-vegetarian goods. Furthermore, several kitchens exhibited poor sanitation standards, unhygienic storage zones, and vegetables covered in visible fungal growth.

Major Quantities of Expired Goods Confiscated
During the rigorous checks, several luxury properties were found housing substantial quantities of compromised ingredients. At The Lalit Ashok (South Annexe), enforcement teams seized and destroyed 76 kg of meat, 200 kg of vegetables, and 32 litres of expired milk. Similar actions were taken at other premier properties, including the Shangri-La Bengaluru, Four Seasons Hotel, Vivanta Whitefield, Taj Yeshwantpur, and Radisson Blu, where out-of-date poultry, fish, and dairy products were immediately impounded.
Strict Legal Action and Official Notices
Formal notices have been issued to the respective Food Business Operators (FBOs) following the raids. The health department confirmed that adjudication proceedings under the Food Safety and Standards Act will be formally initiated before the designated Adjudicating Officer. Further legal steps will depend directly on the analytical findings returned from the state food testing laboratories where the 35 collected samples are currently being processed.
